Garage Sale Safety Free Plant & Insect <br />Garage sale season is here. If planning a garage sale at your <br />house, here are some tips to keep in mind. <br />Always have at least two people working. <br />Lock the doors into your home and do not let shop- <br />pers into your house to try on clothes or use the bath- <br />room – POST A SIGN STATING A BATHROOM/ <br />CHANGING AREA IS NOT AVAILABLE. <br />Keep only a minimal amount of cash on site. <br />Keep the money on you at all times, not on a table. A <br />fanny pack or money belt usually works well for this. <br />Have a phone close by at all times to report any suspi- <br />cious activity. <br />Do not accept checks. <br />Place expensive items near you. <br />Try to place all items outside of garage and keep garage <br />doorshut. <br />Be observant and wary of distractions. <br />Acknowledge all shoppers. <br />Do not answer any questions about alarm systems, and <br />daytime /nighttime occupancy. <br />Do not buy or sell used car seats. <br />City Ordinance restricts the number of sales at a residence <br />to two (2) sales per year, with each sale lasting no longer than <br />five (5) days. Always obtain permission from SAFE <br />the owner prior to posting signs on their K:DS <br />property. We are <br />partnering with local child care centers and family child care <br />homes to provide full day, high quality, comprehensive Early <br />Head Start Services to children aged 6 weeks to 36 months. <br />To qualify for this new program, you must meet Head Start <br />income guidelines AND currently receive Child Care Assis- <br />tance. To find out more and receive an application, call us at <br />763- 783 -4300. <br />Diagnostic Clinics <br />The University of Minnesota Extension - Ano- <br />ka County Master Gardener Volunteer Program <br />offers FREE Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinics <br />for Anoka County residents. These clinics are de- <br />signed to help homeowners identify problems and <br />develop appropriate solutions for their landscapes <br />by using research -based information. Clinics are <br />held on Wednesday evenings at the Bunker Hills <br />Activities Center from 6 -8 pm (please arrive by <br />7:30 pm at the latest), May 20 through August 26 <br />(no clinic the week of July 4). For the convenience <br />of those living on the western side of Anoka Coun- <br />ty, a traveling Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic <br />will be held at the Nowthen Threshing Show, 7415 <br />Old Viking Blvd., Nowthen, MN; August 21 -23. <br />At the Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinics, <br />residents can: bring samples of garden or lawn <br />plants, or weeds for identification; bring samples <br />of damaged plant material for diagnosis of com- <br />mon insect, disease, or other problems; receive <br />recommendations for cultural control of pests and <br />weed problems or discuss with Master Gardeners, <br />other problems or concerns about lawns, trees, <br />flowers, fruits, vegetables, and pests. <br />Samples of diseased plants should be a substan- <br />tial portion approximately 8 -10" in length, with <br />leaves, flowers, and fruit if available, and include <br />margins showing both healthy and damaged <br />material is best. Samples of insects should include <br />the whole insect (not squished) placed in a screw <br />top jar or sealed plastic container. Insects can be <br />placed in a freezer to preserve them. Samples of <br />turf need to be about the size of a small shoe box, <br />and must include the roots. If the turf is diseased, <br />the specimen needs to include a margin of both <br />the healthy side and unhealthy side of the sample. <br />The Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinics are <br />free, but donations are welcome. Participants are <br />asked to please limit three samples per visit.
