August 16, 1993
Bill Johnson, DNql

2) Turtle Protection:

The CiW has proposed that the new road right-of-way be constructed with chain link fencing
along the south side of the roadway. This fencing would be buried in the effort to prevent the
mn2es from tunneling under the fence and gaining access to the roadway. The fencing on both
ends would ,~,rap around to help turtles from circumventing the fencing. The proposed design
does not a/low for culverts under the roadway, as these would a_ltow for turtles to access the
road from the north side of the roadway. These culverts would also allow for the turtles to
gain access to roads to the north of the proposed aiignment. Recent smd/es indicate that the
Bland/ng Turtle has been found to travel 1.5 miles (Star & Tribune, August 4, 1993). With the
wetland and undeveloped property to the south, the turtles should have sufficient m'ea for
nesnng.

I hope this information answers your concerns about the proposed roadway.
