The irritation to the eyes by the dust particles is very obvious to
everyone, just ask our ever increasing number of joggers, but the
danger of real infection is especially worrisome to those of us who
wear contact lens.

Safety

ao

The actual danger of not seeing someone on the road due to the heavy
layer of dust was very graphically illustrated last week when one
of our neighbors was following the school bus in her car and literally
did not see a child standing near the road edge.

B. The facts indicate that all vehicles can be stopped with mo~e accuracy
on a hard surfaced road than on gravel.

C. We feel the same thing holds for bicycles, which lack substantial
control on the gravel.

The visibility difficulties are particularly apparent upon entering
the road from private driveways, as the profuse dust prevents proper
lookout.

E. A hard surface on the road would make winter driving conitions much
easier, due to easier snow removal and therefore less ice.

F. It would seem to me that a better road would make for easier and
quicker availability to emergency vehicles of all types.

3. Draingage

A. Some of our residents have had a severe problem with water run off
into their driveways and garages, yards and their septic fields.

B. The road as you all know has lots of pot holes and at times lots of
mud.

4. Nuisance Factors

Ao

For the last several years a lot of our residents have been unable to
make full use, or for that matter any use, of their yards (if they
face the road) or to open their windows or doors.

We can't seem to avoid the subject o- dust, but with our own cars
this can be a problem when we have just washed it. Have any of you
followed a car down the road and had a stone fly up and hit your
windshield?

C. One of our ladies counted the school buses that go by daily (at a
good speed) and the total was 26 times.

Financial

A. In a purely practical sense, the resale of your home or lot would
have a substantial increase.

Sp C/May 17, 1982
Public Hearing
Page 3
