Special Meeting-Council
A,pri. t ~30,~ 1979. ?age 7

M. Gallagher - what is the depth of the monitoring wells?

Mr. Otter 10 to 15 feet below highest known ground water level which is
about 32 feet.

M. Gallagher - asked about the well on the northwest side, nitrates now that are
traceable in it.

Mr. Otter - recent hydro-geologic tests, passed on ground water flow, there
were some nitrates in the well. The ground water flow~to the southwest
gradient and it can be affected by several different things.

M. Gallagher - Is there a big change in this well?

Mr. Otter - He turned this question over to Anoka County and State because they
have charted water quality of that well.

Mr. Hutchison - the nitrate that was present iLn that well var!~ed from 3
grams per liter to a high of'20 in January of thl~ year ~ ~n Apr%t 1it was
down to 6.8. These wells are ~ins'talted oily for purpose Of'monltor!ng first
ground water encountered. The sample comes'r.~ght off the top~ It don~t
necessarily mean it is com%ng from'the landf~ll~ Sulfer~n the well system
creates a routine egg smell.

Mr. Sha - suggests disinfecti.ng the well once a year t0 get r~d of the black
water.

Mr. Hutchison -this problem doesn't necessari]S have to D.e'related to the
landfill ~t can even be found in munici?al ~_ells.

M. Gallagher - asked if the swamps ~ere tested?

Mr. Knudson (DNR) said he d~d not test the swamp~ but pCA may have tested
wetland areas. He has observed ~oodduck~ and Mallard on swamps nearest the
landfill.

Mr. Hutchison - data was given to Mr. Sba, so many th_~ngs that can happen to the
swamp unrelated to the landfill~ every' year there h~s been at least one
family of ducks there, he never saw a dead duck~

M. Gallagher - asked if they could request that the s~amps be tested at least
once a year.

Mr. Knudson said the swamps get runoff from places ot~er than the landf%ll
and if there was any pollution they would have to find where it's com?ng
from, but it is a good idea to check_ it periodically.

The citizens did not feel enough, testi.ng is being done, there are contaminates
that could filter into the water systems.

Mr. Otter - there are two ground water lisymeters test tubes in the ground to
determine what would be leaching through the ground. These have been concerns
of the regulatory agencies.
