"Some airports are not under the jurisdiction of the community or <br /> local governing body baying control of land usage in the vicinity <br /> of the airport. [~n those cases, the airport owner should use its <br /> influence and best efiorts to close or control landfill <br /> operations within the general vicinity of the airport. <br /> <br />FAA should advisa airpor'~: owners against locating, permitting or <br />concurring in the. loca[:i~n of a landfill on or in the vicinity of <br />airports." <br /> <br />FAA Adviso~.y circular (Ac',) 150/5300-4B CHG8 further identifies <br />sanitary landfills as; ~J_rport hazards. Excerpting from the AC: <br /> <br />"16 o <br /> <br />AIRPORT HAZARDS. Airport hazards have a substantial adverse <br />effect upon the s~.fe .and efficient use of the airport by <br />aircraft and upon the safety of persons and property located <br />on or aear the ai?port. The term object as used in the <br />foil.owing paragra?hs includes, but is not limited to, above <br />ground structures people, equipment, vehicles, aircraft, <br />natural growth~ a~,~.d terrain." <br /> <br />The following objec'[:s ~,.ra airport hazards and must be removed <br />(cessation of use may (:onstitute removal) - parenthetical added. <br /> <br />Garbage dump~ or landfills located within 5,000 feet (1 <br />500 m) of a ~.~on-turbojet runway or 10,000 feet (3 000 m) <br />of a turbojet, runway that may attract birds on or <br />around an airport." <br /> <br />"18. ZONING AND I~ND U~E COMPATIBILITY <br /> <br />La~)d Use~ Un~onstrained use of land adjacent to or in <br />the immediate vicinity of the airport can directly <br />af.tect the efficiency and capacity of the airport. <br />Airport authol~ities should: <br /> <br />Prevent the construction, erection, alteration, or <br />growth cf any structure, tree, or other object in <br />th~ approach areas of the runway or the airport, <br />which wculd constitute an airport hazard; and <br /> <br />(2) <br /> <br />Restrict t'~e use of land adjacent to or in the <br />immediate vicinity of the airport to activities <br />and purpos~s compatible with normal airport <br />operatioas including landing and takeoff of <br />air,:raft ~ <br /> <br />This may be accomplished by acquiring and retaining <br />easements, other interest, or rights for the use of land <br />and airspace~ or by adopting and enforcing zoning <br />regulations~" <br /> <br />2 <br /> <br /> <br />
