NEWS i <br />COON RAPIDS DEVELOPMENT COMPANY ..,.,,, .... <br />PARTNERS IN PROGRESS <br /> <br />"A Nonprofit SBA Certified Development Company" <br /> <br />Vol. 3, Issue 3 Fall 1987 <br /> <br />Honeywell Moves Division <br /> to Coon Rapids <br /> <br /> Honeywell's Air Transport Systems Division will move to <br />Coon Rapids by the end of the year. The commercial avia- <br />tion busi.mss, currently located in St. Louis Park, will pc- <br />cupy the 185,000 square foot facility at 8840 Evergreen <br />Boulevard. Formerly named the Sperry Commercial Flight <br />Systems Division, this group was acquired by Honeywell as <br />part of its acquisition of the Sperry Aerospace Group from <br />Unisys in December 1986. The move to Coon Rapids also <br />allows Honeywell's Military Avionics Division, which will <br />remain in St. Louis Park, to expand operations. An <br />estimated 650 employees will be affected by the move to <br />Coon Rapids. A breakdown Of employees includes 400 in <br />administrative and production plus 250 professional <br />engineers. <br /> <br /> The Minneapolis operation designs and produces inertial <br />reference and navigation systems and fuel management <br />systems for the air transport and business aircraft in- <br />dustries. The Sperry Commercial Flight Systems Group, <br />headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona designs, manufactures <br />and services airborne products and systems for commer- <br />cial markets. Major customers are the manufacturers of <br />commercial airliners and business aircraft, major air car- <br />r,ers and corr, muter airiines, and the corporate owners and <br />operators of fixed and rotary-wing business aircraft. <br /> <br /> Honeywell is a Minneapolis-based international elec- <br />tronics corporation that supplies automation and control <br />systems for homes and buildings, industry, aerosp, ace. and <br />defense. The c3mpany has 78,030 em,~io/ees worldwide. <br />with 1986 sales of S5.4 bili~on. <br /> <br />Coon Rapids Featured <br />In Market Focus <br /> <br /> Coon Rapids was featured in ;he Jul)' 6, 1987 issue cf <br />the Ivlinnesota Real Estate Journal Market Focus section. <br />The pull-out section inclu::es not only information on avail- <br />able sites, but aiso information on area development, <br />resources, ant.: imi)ortant c~en;ographics on the community. <br />Complimentary copies are ava_liable through the Ci,.%./ o' <br />Coon Rapids and at the CRDC office. <br /> <br />Highway 610 and River <br />Bridge Are Open <br /> <br /> Highway 610 and the new river bridge were officially <br />open for traffic on October 1, providing the City of Coon <br />Rapids with an important link to the metropolitan transpor- <br />tation network. The new four-lane bridge over the <br />Mississippi River connects with Highways 10 and 47 in <br />Coon Rapids on the east side, and Highway 252 in <br />Brooklyn Park on the west side. <br /> <br /> Dedication ceremonies were held on Saturday, October <br />10, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bridge opening festivities <br />included a bicycle sprint race, a band concert, a walk <br />across the bridge, a community picnic, a performance by <br />800 dancers from Stage Door of Performing Arts and the <br />official ribbon-tying dedication. <br /> <br /> The bridge has been in the works for over 20 years.
