Included in the Blaine <br />package is a 12,000 seat stadium for soccer and track <br />and field, a domed speed s -kating/hockey fink arena, a <br />field hockey/indoor soccer rink, a velodrome for <br />cycling and a 75 unit dormitory to house training <br />athletes. The estimated cost of the Blaine complex is <br />between 18-20 million dollars. <br /> <br />Governor Perpich also announced a proposal for the <br />formation of the Minnesota Amateur Sports <br />Commission. The role of the seven member <br />commission is to oversee the development of three <br />state facilities at the University of Minnesota, Blaine, <br />and Biwabik, to recruit national and world <br />championship events to the state and organize an <br />annual summer and winter state wide Olympics. Paul <br />Erickson of Circle Pines will serve as the MASC's <br />executive director. Mr. Erickson said that ff these <br />facilities are bulk, Minnesota has an excellent chance in <br />attracting the 1990 U.S. Olympic Festival. The last <br />host city to the festival was Houston, Texas and it was <br />estimated that the event generated $25 million into the <br />local economy. <br /> <br />"The Olympic Training Facility is one of the most <br />important projects proposed for our area. Ramsey St. Francis Spring Lake Park ¢ <br /> VOLUME I, ISSUE I <br /> <br /> Eric 'kson said that the United States Soccer Federation <br /> has provided assurances that the proposed Blaine <br /> facility will be designated a national training center for <br /> the U.S. National Olympic teams. The U.S. Track <br /> and Field organization is interested in desigmating the <br /> Blaine site as one of their four national training centers <br /> in the United States. Hiniker. <br /> <br />The Minnesota Olympic facility study team has been <br />established to oversee the interests of our area in this <br />effort as well as provide the state with essential <br />information on the Blaine component. The study team <br />hired Mr. Mike Westendorf as its project manager and <br />is officed at 11921 Highway 65. <br /> <br />The Blaine site is currently host to the USA Cup <br />International Youth Soccer Tournament and the <br />Minnesota Junior Soccer Association State <br />Tournaments. <br /> <br /> <br />
