METROPOLITAN COUNCIL <br />Data-log No. 5 <br />1970 Housing Unit Estimates <br /> <br />Page 2 <br /> <br />The number of single-family housing starts in the Metropolitan Area dropped <br />by 20 per cent from 1968 (9,981) to 1969 (7,991). The 15,125 multiple-housing <br />units started in 1969 were 8 per cent higher than the 14,067 units started in <br />1968. There were 1,764 more mobile homes located in the seven counties <br />than in 1968, an increase of 370 per cent in new mobile homes. However, there were 1,734 demolitions <br />and move-outs for a net gain of 1,200 units. Brooklyn Park led in the total gain <br />department with a net gain of 2,103 units. Of these, 2,108 were new units, two <br />were move-ins, and seven were losses. St. Paul, with 1,279 new units. <br />and 19 additions, was third in the number of new housing permits. However, <br />1,129 losses gave St. Paul a net gain of 169 units. <br /> <br />Nine communities had more than 800 housing starts during 1969. As Table 3 <br />illustrates, with the exception of Blaine, multiple-family units accounted for <br />over half of the new starts. <br /> <br /> <br />
