Mr. Chmielewski recommended that section 3 explain the trail corridors and their connectivity to
other cities. He also reviewed some of the trail plans that would be incorporated into that
section, In section 4 they will identify what the different trail types are.

Chairperson Johns stated that she wanted to make sure that they are using the proper terminology
when they are identifying the different trail types because the City does intend on using the
document for funding purposes.

Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood replied that staff is supporting the language that is being
recommended.

Chairperson Johns inquired if there was "standard" terminology used in other communities when
identifying the different types of trails.

Mr. Chmielewski replied that the terminology really varies. He stated that biggest question is
who is the City drafting the document for.

Chairperson Johns replied that one of the main reasons for drafting the document is to assist with
funding requests.

Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood replied that the other reason the Master Trail plan is being
completed is for the community.

Chairperson Johns stated that she wants to be careful that the language isn't too simple if they
need to use the document for possible funding sources.

Mr. Ctunielewski replied that he will research if the language he is proposing will be a problem
with any of the possible funding sources.

Commissioner Shyrock recommended that Mr. Chmielewski research if the State of Minnesota
has a bicycle or trail plan adopted and if so make sure they use similar language included in that
document.

Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood noted that MnDOT does have a bicycle manual that they
could use as a reference. He also suggested that a glossary area be added to the back of the
document explaining what the terms mean and where those terms may have came from.

Chairperson Johns stated that she likes the tone of the document, but she wants to make sure they
don't undermine themselves.

Mr. Chmielewski continued reviewing the different areas of the document.

Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood stated that one of the things they would like to do is have
each Commission member review the aerial photographs with the trail corridors and then forward
their comments to staff.

Park and Recreation Commission/December 4, 2003
Page 4 of 6
