C. Demographic Trends

1. Population
For the first half of the 20th century Ramsey had a rather steady population
hovering around 500-600 people. It wasn't until the 1950's that Ramsey began
its climb to a population of over 16,000 people in 1996.

The majority of that growth occurred in one decade, the 1970's, during which
time period Ramsey experienced a tremendous boom in housing starts and was
also incorporated as a City (1974). From 1970 to 1980, the City of Ramsey grew
by 7,733 people, a rate of growth that well exceeded all other communities in the
north metropolitan area. Table 2 shows population trends and growth rates for
the City of Ramsey in comparison to surrounding communities, the Metropolitan

area and the State of Minnesota.
