As of the beginning of 2001, the City street lighting system includes
approximately 140 lights that are designated on the Priority Street Lighting System. The Priority
Street Lighting System is comprised of street lights located along intersections of City streets
with State, County, and higher speed City MSA roadways. The purpose of this type of lighting
is more for traffic safety and identifying the location of the intersection on a dark highway than
for security purposes associated with subdivision street lighting. Not all intersections on these
routes currently have priority lights installed. However, all intersections initially identified by
the City Police Department as being high priorities have been provided with street lights. At this
point, the only remaining intersection along major roadways that have yet to receive priority
lighting are minor residential street intersections. At the present time, 40 such intersections
remain to receive street lighting. A budget of $25,000 is allotted for the installation of a dozen
street lights in 2001.
