CASE #

REPORT FROM PUBLIC WORKS
By: Public Works Staff

Background:

The Public Works Committee met on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 and discussed the following
seven cases:

CITIZEN INPUT

CASE #1

Review Placement of Chevrons at the corner of 169th Avenue and Neon
Street

Background:

Last fall the City approved the posting ora series of chevron warning markers at the comer.
of 169th Avenue and Neon Street. This posting was the result of a request by the resident at
this comer (5866 169th Avenue) to remedy the problem of having vehicles slide off the
roadway and into his yard. Subsequent to the placement of these chevrons there was a
complaint regarding the aesthetics of these' warning devices by Mr. Scott Baumgartner who
resides at 5850 169th Avenue, immediately east of the comer property. The Public Works
Committee recommended at their November 16, 2004 meeting that a review of the
situation be made at the May 2005 Public Works Committee meeting. Notice that this
agenda issue is being considered has been sent to both of the property owners identified
above.

Since the posting of the chevrons 'the ~Police department-has not received notice of
accidents at this location. A speed study performed subsequent to the placement of the
chevrons showed a slight decrease of 3 miles per hour in the average maximum speed.
The chevrons are a proper warning device and comply with the recommendations for their
use as outlined in the Manual On Uniform Traffic Control Devices In Minnesota. Staff
therefore recommends that no further action be taken.

Motion recommending to build curb on both the inside and outside curve at the comer of
169th Avenue and Neon Street. The chevrons should remain in place and this case should
be brought back to the Public Works Committee in three months for review and discussion
of removing the chevrons.

Action:

Ratify the consensus of the Public Works Committee.

-355-
