DC Ranch, Scottsdale, AZ

Dead zones are shops located beyond
the main anchor store, away from
heavily traveled areas. Dead zones
make it extremely hard for small
shops to survive. The grocery store in
DC Ranch was as far as people would
walk, they would not go around the
comer to shop at the two end
businesses. Service chains (H & R
Block / Hair Salon) moved into these
two spots.

The town center needs to have a
mixture of businesses side by side that are appealing to the area and to each other.

The park serves as a buffer area
between the residential and market
area. The park idea came from a
children's focus group, in which the
children wanted water and sand
mixture to make mud. The architects
included a spray area for the children
to clean up. The area serves as a great
gathering place for parents and
children.
