like to put this item in front of the City Council on March 23 and ask to go out for bids.
We would like to see $230,000, no more. The timeline would be eight to 12 months from
the order to delivery.

Upon inquiry by A1 Pearson, Dave Lewandowski explained why they should order a tilt
cab instead of a regular cab.

Tom Anderson stated he agrees with the specs.

Carl Grassl stated that when it involves public safety, he does not feel people really care
what you spend.

Motion by Mayor Gamec and seconded by A1 Pearson to recommend going forward and
bringing the bidding issue to the City Council.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gamec, Boardmembers Pearson, Anderson, Grassl,
Lewandowski and Way. Voting No: None. Absent: CouncilmemberHendriksen.

Case #3:

Discussion of Extent Public Safety Board will be Involved in Fire
Station #2

Fire Chief Kapler stated that this item is just for discussion. Once we decide the location
of Fire Station No. 2, he wants to know how this Board wants to be involved. The
architect will design the building and bring it back for approval. He asked if the Board
wants to be involved at that point.

Mayor Gamec felt that after the architect has come up with the plan, then this group
would review it and be able to suggest changes. He felt it is a good idea to have
knowledge of what is happening,

Tom Anderson stated that the information and support is a good concept but cautioned
the Board getting too involved. For example - fire truck - yes, there is a need for it, but
he feels the Board does not need to get involved in the specs of it. The dangers of getting
into the position where the Board becomes too involved are oversight - we are "non-
pros". We would be "pooling ignorance" rather than expertise. We need to be careful of
what we decide.

Mayor Gamec agreed.

Carl Grassl stated we may not have a lot of information/input on what the truck should
look like but he feels it is a positive to have some support. We ran it in front of the
citizens - to support the need is good.

Jim Way stated that by bringing it here tonight, we can prepare ourselves for what the
City Council may ask - it's nice to be prepared ahead of time.

Public Safety Board - March 11, 1999
