Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gamec, Councilmembers Hendriksen, Connolly, Anderson,
and Zimmerman. Voting No: None.

Case #4: Preliminary Design Approval of Fire Station No. 2

Fire Chief Kapler stated that on Thursday, September 9, 1999, the Public Safety Board met to
discuss the preliminary design of Fire Station No. 2. Plans and sketches were presented that
were provided by the architect firm of SEH, which reflected the floor plan that was given
approval by the Public Safety Board on March 11, 1999. The group discussed the design in
length and agreed to the preliminary design of the exterior with the following suggestions:

1. Floor to ceiling windows in the administrative area: It was suggested that the amount of
glass be reduced for easier maintenance and aesthetic reasons.
2. Loot at a more conventional overhead garage door rather than the pictured garage doors,
which have plexi-glass in them.

Councilmember Hendriksen questioned the cost of a curved roof.

Fire Chief Kapler replied that the curved roof versus flat roof would cost $20,000 additional.

Councilmember Anderson expressed concern over a flat roof because of drainage.

Fire Chief Kapler replied that he discussed the flat roof with the architect and was informed that
if the appropriate materials are used on a flat roof, drainage is not a problem.

Councilmember Connolly questioned if it would be feasible to make a second level in the future
for meeting rooms.

Fire Chief Kapler responded that he had not discussed the option, but noted he will research the
information.

Councilmember Connolly stated that she would like Fire ChiefKapler to research the idea.

Councilmember Hendriksen stated that one of the things that the City is constrained with is space
and that if everything goes well the Fire Station will be a reality before the expansion of City
Hall. He questioned if the City could utilize some space for staff in the interim.

Fire Chief Kapler stated that he will discuss the options with the architect and questioned if there
should be a certain number of people to focus on.

Councilmember Hendriksen suggested discussing the issue with the City Administrator. He also
requested that they review options that could be done at minimal cost or without any change to
the building.

City Council/September 14, 1999
