to vote no in the future to a take-over of some of the businesses in Ramsey, if approached again.
Mayor Gamec replied that there is no intention to expand the existing building into Ramsey.
Councilmember Zimmerman stated that it may not be the short term intention, but in the long
term they will need to expand. Mayor Gamec replied that if they expanded onto their existing
building they would go to a three story building. Councilmember Connolly suggested removing
the wording "with the upgrades and improvements necessary" from the resolution.
Councilmember Hendriksen stated that he is in support of the technical college in this area but
noted it is far more expensive to remodel something than it is to start over. He explained that he
would not support a statement supporting remodeling of the existing building. Mayor Gamec
noted that the resolution from the MnSCU Board is if the school is rebuilt it would be rebuilt at
the proposed Ramsey site. Councilmember Hendriksen stated that he did not like the bigger
ilnplications with approving the resolution. Councilmember Anderson stated that her concern is
that the area may lose the school. Mayor Gamec noted that there is strong support by local
businesses in regards to the school. Councilmember Anderson inquired if there would be a way
to support the technical college staying in the area. Councilmember Hendriksen stated that the
general recognition is that the technical college in the current location is not feasible and if there
is not enough money to fund a new school then they need to find the money. Mayor Gamec
explained that the resolution is to show the community support to keep the school in the area.
Councilmember Hendriksen replied that he thinks it is a plan to get the current building
expanded in the current location and he thought the resolution should be in support of the
ongoing educational needs of the Anoka-Ramsey area instead of AHTC.

Motion was amended to remove the wording "..with the upgrades and improvements
necessary..".

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gamec, Councilmembers Anderson, and Connolly. Voting
No: Councilmembers Hendriksen, and Zimmerman.

Marguerite Henke, 14311 Armstrong Boulevard, Ramsey, stated that she wanted to note that the
City of Ramsey is not a community that is dependent on technical colleges. She felt that it was a
wrong perception that many of the youth do not choose to go on to a four-year college.

Councilmember Anderson replied that the statistics from the school district shows that the
number of students that go on to a four-year college is very low.

Ms. Henke stated that she would like to see a survey that shows the majority of the kids from the
area do not go on to college, because she does not think that is accurate.

Mayor Gamec noted that there are currently 540 technical job openings in the City of Ramsey.

City Council/November 9, 1999
