5 Minutes

CASE 416:

REQUEST FOR . SPECIAL SIGNIN3
IN EAST AD'IUMN HEIGHI'S
By: Mike Auspos, Police Olief

Background:

Mrs. Peggy Perkins, 8353 - 168th Lane N.W., has requested that a special sign
be erected in her neighborhood to warn motorists of a child, her four year old
son, who has a handicap that could put him in jeop:3.rdy while moving about the
streets in the area. Her son suffered a stroke and as a result he now wears a
hearing aid and, most significantly, he has a very slow reaction time when
confronted with a need for a response. Not only are his reaction times slowed
when he would need to avoid an oncoming vehiCle, but he could decide to cross a
street when a car is in fact a safe distance {;May and by the time he reacts to
begin his crossing, the vehicle may have closed to the point to be a hazard to
him.

The perkins' home is in East Autumn Heights and there is only one street
leading into the area, fran Armstrong Boulevard N.W.

Recommendation:

The City should erect, on 167th Lane N. W., just east of Armstrong Boulevard
N.W., a warning sign to denote the presence of a handicapped, or deaf, child.
(be sign facing traffic coming into the area would suffice since motorists can
only be in the area by comirig off Armstrong Boulevard N.W.

Fr€C1uently we are asked to put up signs denoting "Children Playing" or "Caution
-children". These are only effective as reminders to motorists who care and
are usually unnecessary anyway since most drivers are well aware that children
exist and do live in homes which are adjacent to streets. In this case,
hCMever, the sign would serve to alert a motorist to the possibility that a
child may react in a totally une}.pected fashion and to be pre:pared.

Review Checklist:

~ini&r&or ~
Attorney
Engineer
Community Developnent Director

Chief of Pol ice
Finance Officer
Public Works Superintendent
Otherh
l

e~
