Qty of Ramsey
Comprehensive Plan Amendment
Transportation Element

. Classify driveways according to the following:
Commercial driveway: Access for retail, office, high-intensity residential, or
government/community services.
Industrial driveway: Access for large industrial, office park, mixed-use, or
warehouse developments, which may also accommodate heavy trucks.
Residential driveway: Access to individual residential sites. This category should
not be allowed direct access to arterial streets.

Access ~oint Spacing and Policies

Spacing between driveways or other road access points must allow safe efficient execution of all
movements including turns and crossing flows. The degree of driveway spacing control should be
consistent with the through traffic speed and land development intensity along the street. The
City will adopt the following driveway spacing specifications.

A desirable spacing for principal arterials is 200 feet or more. Desirable spacing for minor
arterials is 185 feet or more. Where these dimensions are not possible, the following table
presents minimum spacing requirements.

The spacings described in Table 3-5 are between two-way driveways. The spacings would be
reduced by halfbetween one-way driveways, provided the out-bound driveway is upstream on the
through street.

Where driveways are to be signalized, a minimum spacing of 1,200 to 1,500 feet to any other
signalized intersection should be maintained. If the signalized intersection is aT-intersection with
the remote possibility of future extension of the fourth leg, a minimum spacing of 600 feet from
the nearest signalized intersection may be acceptable, depending on traffic signal warrants and
local capabilities. In any event, driveway signals are to be directly coordinated with any existing
or planned signals within one-half mile of the signalized driveway.

Driveway/access point locations should be coordinated along any street. Where possible,
driveways on opposite sides of the street should be aligned to facilitate cross travel between
developments and take advantage of median breaks. Where this is not possible, driveways on
opposite sides of the street should be off-set to provide sufficient storage for left-turning vehicles.

Page 3-45
