If
constructed properly, paved trails cause less soil erosion that other types of trail surfaces.
Higher resurfacing costs are required for the paved trails, but less damage to the
landscape will occur. The asphalt will need resurfacing every seven to fifteen years
depending on the site conditions and construction quality (NBPC Technical Brief, 1995).

The following estimated costs for bituminous maintenance for roadways, parking
lots and trails was supplied by Anoka County Parks and Recreation at Bunker Hills:

.

seal coating

$.90/sq.yd.

-1/4" trap rock for trails

.

overlays

$10.00/sq. yd.

Sealing the entire asphalt surface is expensive and should be done during the
second year. This doubles or even triples the life span of the asphalt material by keeping
out moisture. It will save time and money that would be placed into future treadway
repairs. Asphalt should then be resealed about every 5 years thereafter for the life of the
trail (Trail Design and Maintenance handbook, 1994).

The gravel portion of the trail system will also need to be maintained on a regular
basis. The trails may become eroded on slopes, in wet terrain or in popular areas. In
some instances, the original soil profile may need to become reconstructed (AMC, 1977).
Gravel or crushed stone trails should last 7 to 10 years, but due to washouts, erosion and
drain dips, do require frequent patching and spot repairs.
