ANOKA COUNTY
NEWS RELEASE

More Anoka County women, infants and children
will receive WIC benefits due to legislation passed
this spring. The Minnesota legislature appropriated
an additional $1 million over the next two years to
the program.
Although WIC has been highly successful in
Anoka County, many potentially eligible women are
not currently participating in the program, according
to Peggy Heaver, MPH, RD, supervisor of the Anoka
County WIC program. Good nutrition is especially
important in pregnancy. Heaver noted studies show-
ing that a proper diet during pregnancy can mean
a healthier baby at birth and fewer health problems
as the child grows up.
The Anoka County WIC program is currently in-
volved in an outreach effort inspired by a 1986 Min-
nesota law, which calls for an increase of 10 percent
a year in the percentage of participants who are
pregnant.
More than 2,000 people in Anoka County par-
ticipate in the WIC program, which has been
operating in Minnesota since 1974. In addition to
pregnant women, eligible WIC participants can in-
clude nursing mothers, infants, and children up to
age five who meet criteria set by WIC.
Coupons are issued to participants and are used
to buy milk, cheese, eggs, juice and cereal or infant
formula. WIC participants also receive free nutrition
assessments, diet counseling and nutrition educa-
tion. The goal of the program is to promote the
development of healthy babies and small children
by helping families make wise food choices.
Heaver says a number of studies have confirmed
that the program has a significant impact on the
health of mothers and children who participate. In
particular, it has been found that pregnant women
participating in WIC have fewer premature and low
birth weight babies. They are also more likely to
begin prenatal care early in their pregnanices, and
are less likely to have stillbirths. Children who par-
ticipate in WIC tend to have better memories and
larger vocabularies. WIC participants and their
families tend to have better diets than
non-participants.
Heaver notes that WIC is an equal opportunity pro-
gram. Persons who believe they have been
discriminated against because of race, color, na-
tional origin, age, sex or handicap should write im-
mediately to the Secretary of Agriculture,
Washington, D.C. 20250.
For more information on the Anoka County WIC
program, call 422-7055.

AREA RECYCLING CENTERS

The residents of Ramsey have the following recycl-
ing centers available for their use:
Regional Landfill Recycling Center · Sunfish Lake
Blvd. NW · Ramsey, MN · Hours: Monday-Friday
8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. · Saturday 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon
· Accepting: aluminum, glass, tin, newsprint, tires,
large appliance drop-off
Boy Scouts drop-off · Ramsey Plaza Shopping
Center · 167th Ave. NW and Highway 47 · Ramsey,
MN · Hours: 24 hours a day · Accepting: newsprint
Peterson Brothers Sanitation · 740 Industry Ave.
NW · Anoka, MN · Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00
a.m.-3:00 p.m. · Accepting: aluminum, glass, tin,
scrap iron, newsprint
Anoka Senior High Band · Anoka County
Fairgrounds · Anoka, MN · Hours: 24 hours a day
· Accepting: newsprint
Grosslein Beverages · 13554 Tungsten St. NW ·
Ramsey, MN · Hours: Thursday 1 :00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
· Accepting: Aluminum cans
Schwartzman and Sons · 2905 Ferry St. North ·
Anoka, MN · Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30
p.m. · Saturday 8:00 a.m.-11 :30 a.m. · Accepting:
scrap metal, cars, car batteries, aluminum
Ramsey City Garage · 14100 St. Francis Blvd. NW
· Ramsey, MN · Hours: Monday-Friday 7:30
a.m.-4:00 p.m. · Accepting: waste oil
Anoka Public Works · 215 Harrison St. · Anoka,
MN · Hours: 24 hours a day · Accepting: waste oil
Jellison's Auto Wrecking · 434-6944 · 3817 149th
Avenue NE · Ham Lake, MN · Accepting: junk cars
with title
Andover Auto Parts · 755-6410 · 13526 Jay Street
· Andover, MN · Accepting, junk cars with title or
proof of land ownership
Anoka Auto Wrecking · 755-4580 · 1775 Bunker
Lake Blvd. · Anoka, MN · Accepting: junk cars with
title
Major Appliance Pickup Service · 291-1100 · Ac-
cepting: Major appliances for $20.00
Bunker Hills Regional Park · 757-3920 · Hanson
Blvd. 1/2 mile south of Bunker Lake Blvd. · Tuesday
& Thursday by appointment only · Accepting:
Diseased wood only no stumps
If residents have any questions concerning the
disposal or recycling of solid waste, please contact
Jim Gromberg at 427-1410.

PESTICIDE APPLICATOR

CERTIFICATION SET

There will be Private Pesticide Applicator Certifica-
tion training on Saturday, February 25, 1989, 9:00
a.m.-3:00 p.m. or March 6 & 7, 1989,6:30-9:00 p.m.
at the Anoka County Extension Service, Activities
Center, 550 Bunker Lake Blvd. N.W., Anoka, MN
55304; announces Harvey Buchite, Anoka County
Agriculture/Horticulture Agent.
Minnesota private pesticide applicators (those who
apply pesticides to their own crops and property)
need a private applicator identification card in order
to purchase restricted use products. Most home
buyers look closely at the physical qualities and
characteristics of the structure, whether the roof,
basement, wiring and other areas appear to be in
good repair.
However, there are many other factors that are not
so obvious when looking at a home and which a
realtor may fail to discuss. If your are thinking of buy-
ing a home, here are a few items which you should
check that may affect its desirability or value in future
years:
· What is the zoning of the parcel or block? What
is the zoning of adjacent land? Single-family
homes are sometimes located on or adjacent to
property which is zoned for multiple-family or com-
mercial use.
· What type of street is the house located on? All
city streets are designed as residential, collector
or thoroughfare and are designed and con-
structed to provide for certain traffic volumes and
uses.
· What does the city's long-range comprehensive
plan propose for the area?
· Are there any unpaid special assessments, en-
cumbrances or convenants on the property?
· Is the house considered "non-conforming" or
does it fail to meet minimum setback re-
quirements? Homes that do not conform to ex-
isting zoning regulations cannot be expanded
unless an unusual hardship can be demonstrated
and a variance granted by the City Council.
· What types of building permits have been issued
for repairs or remodeling since the home was
built?
· Is the home subject to drainage problems or does
it experience frequent water or sewer problems?
All of this information can be found at City Hall.
If you have checked all of these items, you may be
a wiser, happier home buyer.

, .

BUSINESS SCENE

By: Ramsey Economic Development Commission

TER RAE STREET DESIGNS AND
SPECIAL TV ADVERTISING
PROFESSIONALS

TER RAE Street Designs is a "euro-Iook" conver-
sion business, specializing in aero dynamic ground
effect packages, custom paint and graphics, wheels
and tires.
