MEDIATION SERVICES

Anoka County

A family recently got into an argument with their
daycare provider over the amount charged for ser-
vices on a holiday.
The parties wanted to resolve .the problem, but
every time they tried to communicate, they ended
up yelling at one another. .
Through mediation, the two parties were able t~
settle the issue of paid holidays and resume their
relationship. All parties were satisfied.. ,
Disputing parties of!en see .th~m~elves I~ a Wln-
lose situation in a conflict. Mediation IS an option that
can result in an agreement that is acceptable to both
parties and takes care of the needs and .want::; of all
involved, said Ann Wallerstedt, Executive Director
of Mediation Services for Anoka County.
Other people's pets, children and annoying habits
account for most of the neighborhood cases we han-
dle, said Wallerstedt, but we have very effectively
assisted parties to settle landlord/tenant problems
and business/consumer disputes. We have handl-
ed employee/employer situations and large group
community problems too.
Mediation is free, confidential, speedy and con-
venient. Both sides meet with two trained community
volunteer mediators to discuss the issues and ex-
plore options to formulate an agre.ement.
In mediation, parties involved decide the outcon:e.
And even though the agreement is not legally bin-
ding, the parties. c~mplied. in ~8% of the cases
ties have a hand in fashioning the terms of settle-
ment there is personal commitment to the end result,
said Wallerstedt.
