<br />RAMSEY JOINS <br /> <br />COMMISSIONER <br /> <br />HAAS STEFFEN IN <br /> <br />ADOPTING THE RUM RIVER <br /> <br />"The enthusiasm for the Rum River "Adopt-A- <br />River" Project is outstanding," said Ano~a County <br />Commissioner Natalie Haas Steffen, Project Coor- <br />dinator. "It's great to see Anoka, Andoyer, St. Fra.n- <br />cis, Ramsey, and Oak Grove support t~l~ commu~lty <br />project as well as individuals and CIVIC organIza- <br />tions." <br />The goals of the Rum River "Adopt-A-River" ~ro- <br />ject are to clean up debris in and beside the 24 miles <br />of the Rum River; cover the banks with ne,,:, plan- <br />tings to stabilize them; and for many groups I~volv- <br />ed in the project, check on an adopted section of <br />river from time to time in the future to ensure that <br />it stays clean and beautiful. The project is being im- <br />plemented under the guidelines of the Minnesota <br />Clean Rivers Project. The dates for the project are <br />April 22 and 23. Governor Rudy Perpich will ,kick-~ff <br />the project at a ceremony to be held Apnl 20 In <br />Anoka. <br />Several civic groups have already signed up to <br />work on April 22 and 23 cleaning the river. and plan- <br />ting the banks. A majority of the cleanup will be ~om- <br />pleted April 22. The Anoka Rotary, Ramsey Lions, <br />St. Francis American Legion, St. Francis Lions, Oak <br />Grove Lions and Anoka Lions have donated money <br />towards pi~nic supplies and seeding materi~1. <br />Grosslein Beverage, Land-O-Lakes, Jack and Jill, <br />and Andover Festival Foods are donating food for <br />the celebration picnic. Waste Management, Inc. is <br />donating garbage pick-up services. Hunt's Bus Com- <br />pany is donating vehicles. , <br />"We're very grateful to the companies an~ <br />organizations that have donated money or food, <br />Commissioner Haas Steffen said. "We couldn't have <br />done it without their exceptional community support <br />for projects like this." . , <br />Volunteers will meet at four different locations <br />along the Rum at 8 a.m. on April 22 ~or in::;tructions <br />and training. Mediation IS an option that <br />can result in an agreement that is acceptable to both <br />parties and takes care of the needs and .want::; of all <br />involved, said Ann Wallerstedt, Executive Director <br />of Mediation Services for Anoka County. <br />Other people's pets, children and annoying habits <br />account for most of the neighborhood cases we han- <br />dle, said Wallerstedt, but we have very effectively <br />assisted parties to settle landlord/tenant problems <br />and business/consumer disputes. We have handl- <br />ed employee/employer situations and large group <br />community problems too. <br />Mediation is free, confidential, speedy and con- <br />venient. Both sides meet with two trained community <br />volunteer mediators to discuss the issues and ex- <br />plore options to formulate an agre.ement. <br />In mediation, parties involved decide the outcon:e. <br />And even though the agreement is not legally bin- <br />ding, the parties. c~mplied. in ~8% of the cases <br />mediated by Mediation Services In 1988. Life or property threatening fires <br />should be reported to 911. .. <br />The city is providing a brush chipping progr~m to <br />all residents for the entire summer to process limbs <br />and prunings into usable chips to avoid the risk and <br />waste of open burning. <br /> <br />I COMPOST, TREE DISPOSAL <br />SITES TO OPEN APRIL 12 <br /> <br />The Anoka County Bunker Hills compost and <br />diseased tree disposal sites will open Wednesday, <br />April 12. . <br />The sites are located one mile north on Hanson <br />Boulevard off Highway 242 (Main Street) in Coon <br />Rapids. The hours for residents are Monday, <br />Wednesday and Friday, noon to 7:30 p.m.; Satur- <br />day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. <br />"Recycling yard waste creates a valuable <br />resource and it can greatly reduce the amou~t o~ gar- <br />bage landfilled," said Anoka County Commissioner <br />Nick Cenaiko, chairman of the Anoka County Parks <br />Committee. . <br />The Anoka County Board supports the compostlng <br />program and encourages people to utilize the free <br />service. . . <br />Residents may bring leaves and grass clippings <br />to the compost site. There is no charge. Resl~ents <br />must empty the yard waste and, take the containers <br />or bags home again. Do not bnng brush, branches <br />or garbage. <br />Compost made at the site is. also fr~e for home <br />gardening. Residents must bnng their own con- <br />tainers and load the compost themselves. <br />Diseased oak, elm and pine trees (no s~umps) can <br />be brought to the wood disposal area site, also at <br />Bunker Hills, for a nominal fee. <br />For more information contact the Anoka County <br />Park Department, 757-3920. <br /> <br />ANOKA COUNTY 4.H YOUTH <br /> <br />EDUCATE THOUSANDS <br /> <br />ABOUT OAK WILT <br /> <br />Anoka County 4-H Clubs have reached thousands <br />of people through their oak wilt banners. In an ~f- <br />fort to educate youth in_Anoka County about oak wilt, <br />an Anoka County 4-H Club Oak Wilt Banner C~n- <br />test was developed by the Anoka County Extension <br />Office. Packets of educational materials we~e. sent <br />to each club in the county inviting them to participate. <br />Eighteen clubs, 187 club members joined in the pro- <br />ject by each club entering a 3' by 5' banne.r. The ban- <br />ners that were submitted were very creative and the <br />quality of workmanship was superb. The banners <br />were judged by Dr. David French, Pro~essor from the <br />University of Minnesota; Fawn Klnsm.an, Tree <br />Maintenance from the City of Coon Rapids; Andy <br />Neal Extension Committee Member; and Orma <br />Kraai, 4-H volunteer. Judging was not easy but <br />places 1-5 with a tie at fifth place produced ~he top <br />six banners. Winners were: 1 st place-Llnwo~d <br />Loons, 2nd-Columbia Heights Hylanders, 3rd-Wlld <br />Winners, 4th-Blaine Busy Bees, 5th-Handy. ~elp~rs <br />and Mississippi Mystics. Prize money, participation <br />ribbons and certificates signed by Senator Greg Dahl <br />were presented at the annual Share-The-Fun Final <br />night, March 17th. <br />The banners have been on display throughout the <br />metro area beginning with the Minnesota State <br />Capitol, Anoka County Courthouse and Northtown <br />Mall and will continue to be used throughout the <br />metro area at various Arbor Day celebrations and <br />finally ending up in various local city halls. . <br />We are proud and honored to have received a <br />House Resolution from the Minnesota House of <br />Representatives commendin.g the 4-~ Clubs in <br />Anoka County for their creative oak wilt banners. <br /> <br />YOU CAN HELP CONTROL <br /> <br />OAK WILT! <br /> <br />Residents can help to control oak wilt by following <br />the recommendations listed below: <br />1. Never prune oaks in May or J~ne <br />2. If an oak is accidently wounded In May and June, <br />apply a pruning paint imm~diately. . <br />3. Do not permit anyone to tnm your trees uSing <br />climbing spikes. <br />4. Control movement and spread of disease by us- <br />ing a vibratory plow to severe root systems bet- <br />ween diseased and healthy trees. , <br />5. Cover oak wood piles in May and June that died <br />the previous year. <br />6. Brush disposal can be a pro- <br />blem and chipping converts the brush into a usable <br />product, with no dise?-se problems. Rar:nsey's b,rus~ <br />chipping program will offer the following services. <br />· Free brush chipping <br />. Information on tree disease prevention and <br />control <br />. Information on the use of wood chips <br />· Wood chips available for use <br />. Information on the composting of leaves and <br />grass <br />These free services are offered to control the cur- <br />rent disease problems and decrease the need for <br />burning permits to be issued durin~ the year. Brush must be stacked with the trunk ends in <br />the same direction. <br />. Brush diameter should be 5 inches or less and <br />length is restricted to 6-8 feet. Brush piles may <br />be stacked up to 6 feet in height. <br />. Brush must be neatly stacked where it is readily <br />accessible to the truck and chipper trailer, i.e. <br />alongside driveways. <br />· Only clean brush and limb piles will be ac- <br />cepted; i.e., no rocks, dirt, whole trees, stumps, <br />metal plastic, cloth, boards, leaves or grass. <br />. Healthy and diseased brush, Ii,mb.s and prun- <br />ings will be accepted. The chipping proce:ss <br />removes the disease hazards and the chips <br />can be used for mulch, landscaping, weed con- <br />trol and moisture retention. <br /> <br />NOTE: At this time, the schedule for the chipping <br />operations in May is being developed. More infor- <br />mation will be published in the May issue of the <br />Ramsey Resident regarding chipping schedules for <br />the rest of the summer.
