WilDLIFE SYMPOSIUM
(or
"Crillers In The 'Burbs")

Sunday, March 3, Ramsey's Park Department will be
hosting representatives from Wild and Free, a nonprofit
group dedicated to the preservation and rehabilitation of
injured and orphaned wildlife. Barb Talbot, Vice President
of Wild and Free, who is also a veterinarian technician for
the University of Minnesota's Raptor Center, will have a
presentation at 1 :00 p.m. This presentation will provide
information on their organization, the do's and don'ts
when seemingly distressed animals are encountered, and
also how you can help. Information, displays and
brochures will be available. Also on display will be
Minnesota's smallest falcon, "Falco", the American Kestrel
that sometimes is improperly called the sparrow hawk.
An added feature of the wildlife symposium will be the
construction of bird houses for our parks. Bill Schrader of
Rum River Lumber in Anoka, was kind enough to donate
all materials to construct 5 kestrel boxes, 5 wood duck
houses and 12 bluebird homes. Also being built that
afternoon will be an osprey platform planned for Rivers
Bend Park.
Copies of birdhouses, bat houses and bird feeder
plans will be available free of charge. Scounge around
your garage for scrap lumber, tools and assistance will be
waiting. How about building one bird house for the park
of your choice and another for home? Maybe affixing
your child's name on the house? This may also be an
interesting science fair project.

WHERE: Ramsey's Park Center Building
Central Park, 925 161 st Avenue

WHEN: 12 noon to 5 p.m. Sunday,
March 3

WHO: Yourself and other friends of
wildlife

WHY: We all must do our part to protect
wildlife and natural diversity

HOW: By attending or calling if you can't
make it to obtain plans for your own
birdhouses or feeders.

It is hoped that a wide variety of wildlife admirers from
the community will attend. Knowledgeable individuals will
be on hand to answer questions about assisting and
attracting wildlife. Great success, given certain elements,
can be achieved by attracting native animals, from
predators on down to songbirds and butterflies, with such
things as simple as particular landscapings.
There is no cost for the symposium and all
participants are volunteers. For more details contact
Mark Boos at 427-1741 , 427-1410 or 689-4572.
ICE SKATING UPDATE

A moderate January and first part of February has reduced 1990-91 's skating season a bit. Most years the rinks are
still in use and being maintained until about February 15. At which time the daily high temperatures are gradually rising,
the length of day and the angle of the sun make it very difficult to keep our ice from melting or evaporating. However,
during the spring of '89, your park department was sweeping and flooding until March.
This winter's skating season cannot be considered a failure though. Rink and warming house use was up. Also, for
the first time a skating path was constructed. The path leaves the pleasure rink at Central Park and weaves its way
around our newly created baseball field and returns. The skating trail is nearly a quarter mile in length and is very
popular with couples and parent instructing little ones with the first skating experience. This newest addition to our winter
park activities may well be entirely unique.
Judging in part by the myriad of footprints in the snow, phase I of Central Park's sliding hill was also well received. At
the time of this writing much of the snow has left the unshaded areas of the park, put not our north facing sliding hill.
Hope you had a chance to enjoy our snow and cold. Any park and recreation ideas or suggestions will be warmly
received. Please feel free to contact Mark Boos, Parks/Utility Coordinator, at 427-1741 or 427-1410.
P.S. Reminder - The March 14 meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission's park of the month will be the
Ramsey Elementary School grounds.
