HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS

WASTE COLLECTION DAY

On April 30, 1988, The City of Ramsey and the
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will be collec-
ting household hazardous wastes at City Hall 9:00
A.M. - 2:00 P.M. The goal of the project is threefold:
1. To prevent potentially hazardous materials from
winding up in the landfill; 2. To rid our homes of
potentially dangerous materials; and 3. To educate
our citizens as to what constitutes given materials
as hazardous and present alternatives to those
materials.

The MPCA defines household hazardous wastes
as those materials which are improperly stored and
which exceed certain limits based upon the
following:

1. How easily it catches fire (example: gasoline)
2. How acidic or caustic it is (example: oven
cleaners)
3. How toxic long and short-term exposures are to
humans and animals (examples: pesticides and
antifreeze)
4. How easily contaminants leach from it (ex-
amples: waste motor oil, paint strippers)
5. How explosive or reactive it is with water, heat
or pressure (example: aerosol cans)
6. How much oxygen or other gas it adds to a fire
(example: hydrogen peroxide)

These materials can pose safety and/or environmen-
tal hazards if they are used, stored, or disposed of
improperly.
In general, the best way to dispose of these items
is to use them according to their instructions, or to
give them to someone who will.

Where to look for hazardous wastes in your homes:
The basement, kitchen, garage, utility rooms,
storage shed, laundry rooms and bathrooms.

What to look for:
Cleaning products: Drain toilet and window
cleaners; disinfectants; septic tank cleaners; bleach;
ammonia; cleaning solvents and spot removers;
oven cleaners.
Hobby and health care products: artists' paints
and inks; waterproofers; photographic chemicals;
glues and cements.
Paint and building products: paint thinners, strip-
pers and solvents; spray cans; lacquers, stains and
varnishes; wood preservatives; acids for etching;
asphalt and roof tar; latex and oil based paints.
Automotive products: antifreeze; solvents; battery
acid; gasoline; rust inhibitors, removers; used motor
oil; brake and transmission fluids.
Gardening and pest control products: sprays and
dusts; ant and rodent killers; flea powders; weed
killers; banned pesticides.

What you may bring to the collection (All must be
in original containers: DO NOT MIX ITEMS - SOME
CHEMICALS WHEN COMBINED CAN BE
DEADL Y):
All cleaning solvents
All hobby and health care products
All automotive products (except tires and metals)
All gardening and pest control products EXCEPT
2, 4, 5-T, 2, 4, 5-TP and Ronnel.

We will be accepting all paints, wood preser-
vatives, thinners and solvents, provided they are in
their original containers. These will be re-used, so
to speak, by...
We will be collecting waste motor oil separtely for
recycling.

Take time and care when packaging and transpor-
ting this materials:
All items must be properly labeled.
All items must be kept separately and in original
containers. Make sure the lids are tight.
Protect your eyes and skin when you handle the
waste.
Prevent tipover; when transporting. Line a box with
a plastic bag and wrap each item in a newspaper.
Transport items in your car's trunk or adequately
ventilate the passenger compartment while
transporting.

A WORD FROM YOUR

TREE INSPECTOR
By Bruce Bacon

May is Arbor Month. Spring is the time to:

. Cease pruning your trees;
· Trickle water your favorite trees and add a ring of
mulch;
· Be careful of grass fires and think about landscap-
ing for protection from wildfires;
· Locate and start your compost pile for the season.
You can construct a wood or wire bin to hold your
organic yard debris. A "how to" brochure about
compost is free on the literature counter at the
Ramsey Municipal Center;
. Get together with concerned neighbors to discuss
a diseased tree control plan. The Tree Inspector
would be happy to come to your neighborhood
meeting.

PLANT A TREE! On Saturday, April 30, 1988 you
can pick up a free Norway pine seedling at the Anoka
Food Co-Op, 2134 - 2nd Avenue North. The annual
tree sale will be on Saturday, May 7, 1988 at the
Ramsey Municipal Center.
Residents also may participate in the Anoka Coun-
ty Soil and Water Conservation District reforestation
program. Packets of ten trees will be available on
May 13, 14, 16 and 17, 1988 at the Anoka County
Fairgrounds. Ginnala maple, silver maple, and green
ash seedlings and Norway pine and white spruce
transplants are in one packet. The cost is from $3.50
to $4.50 per packet. You are invited to call the Anoka
County Soil and Water Conservation District for fur-
ther information at 757-4221.

Box Elder Bugs

Box elder bugs aggregations are highly visible for
some households. Box elder bugs are sucking in-
sects and they feed on the sweet sap of the box elder
tree which is in the maple family. Last summer was
a good growing season and two relatively warm
winters have increased the population of the ever
familiar box elder bug.
These bugs are poor tasting to birds and other
animals, therefore, they have no predators. Adults
hibernate over the winter, often under the shingles
or around the foundation of our warm houses. Our
early and sunny spring weather tends to bring them
out ahead of their food. As the sap rises, the trees
bud and flower (the flowers are precursors to seeds).
As the sap quickens, the box elder bugs will move
to their food source of tender, juicy spots on the box
elder tree.
Fortunately, these bugs are easy to control. They
can be swept up by hand and poured into a bucket
with dish soap detergent which kills them. They can
also be vacuumed with a machine or sprayed with
a soap detergent mixture. They they can be buried
or added to your compost.
Reducing the number of box elder trees near your
buildings may not help and it's often not practical
to take down your neighbor's trees either. Since the
bugs are very mobile, they can travel great distances
to congregate around your house. Please remember,
these aggregations and population peaks are tem-
porary. Even if annoying, they are not dangerous.
NAME RAMSEY'S KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL PROGRAM

Help us name Ramsey's Keep America Beautiful program!

As you may know, the City is participating in a program to reduce litter, facilitate recycling and encourage
neighborhood clean-up. Initiation of this program is through the Keep America Beautiful system, a national
organization.

We would like the name of Ramsey's program to be as individual as Ramsey! To encourage participation
in this effort, we are having a contest open to all Ramsey residents to suggest a name for this program.
In addition, Waste Management of Minnesota has donated CASH prizes for the three best suggestions (to
be judged by the Keep America Beautiful Committee). First prize - $50.00, Second prize - $25.00, Third prize
- $15.00. Please submit your suggestions on the form below:
