Board and Commission
members volunteer their time
and expertise to advise and
make recommendations to
Anoka City Council in specific
areas of City business. This
month we highlight the impor-
tant work of the RUM RIVER
BANKS IMPROVEMENT COM-
M ITTEE:
The City of Anoka recently
formed the Rum. River Banks
Improvement Committee to
help resolve problems cur-
rently affecting this scenic
waterway known as the Rum
River. Some of the concerns
include erosion, trash ac-
cumulation, lack of access
points to the river, trails, and
general apathy regarding the
river's aesthetic qualities and
panorama.
Although just getting start-
ed, this committee has already
noted the need for aquatic rec-
reation and walkways to allow
residents access along the
river without the hindrance of
traffic. It is further recognized
that improving the "Rum" will
improve the image otAnoka as
a whole. By integrating the
commercial district with this
waterway, as will be done VJith
the Main Street pede:strian

..

underpass, shoppers and busi-
ness employees alike can en-
hance their shopping experi-
ence by enjoying riverfront
scenery.
Where once the Rum River
was the center of activity for
grist and saw mills, where
presently the river remains un-
noticed to all but a few fisher-
men and people strolling
about Riverside Park, there
will exist a river with trails and
amenities sufficient to draw
the attention and interest of
the public.
Members of the Rum River
Banks Improvement Commit-
tee consist of the following
people:
Executive Committee
John Weaver
Jerry Jacob
Robert W.
