Ramsey Student Recognized
for Art Achievements

, I

The United States Achieve-
ment Academy announced
that Heath Wieker, son of Mrs.
Nancy Wieker of Juniper
Ridge Drive, has been named a
1985 United States National
Award winner in the subject of
art.
Heath Wieker attends Fred
Moore Junior High School and
was nominated for the award
by his art teacher, Mrs. Pat Lar-
son. Heath will appear in the
United States Achievement
Academy Official Yearbook.
The criteria for selection are
a student's academic perform-

ance, interest and aptitude,
leadership qualities, responsi-
bility, enthusiasm, motivation
to learn and improve, citizen-
ship, attitude and cooperative
spirit, dependability, and rec-
ommendation from a teacher
or director. This award is a
prestigious honor very few stu-
dents can ever hope to attain.
In fact, the, Academy recog-
nizes less than 10% of all
American high school stu-
dents.
The City of Ramsey takes
great pride in acknowledging
Heath's achievement.
Support Group Project Wins Grant

!o-

Single female heads of
households must overcome
many barriers in order to at-
tend school. Barriers like
transportation, child care, tui-
tion costs, and time short-
ages.
Thanks to a joint project
sponsored by Anoka, Ramsey,
Washington, and Dakota
Counties JTPAs (Job Training
Partnership Act) their respec-
tive Vocational Technical In-
stitutes, and IN (Work Incen-
tive Program), some of these
barriers have been diminished.
Support groups for single
female heads of households
were established at 916 Vo
Tech in Ramsey County, the
Dakota County Vo Tech, and
Anoka Vo Tech, helping those
students raise their self-
esteem, providing a source of
encouragement, and increas-
ing their retention level. Coun-
selors from each of the Vo
Techs and from the JTPA pro-
vided professional input in the
support groups, which gave
financial and personal support
to their participants.
The project recently was
awarded a $47,000 grant when
it was ranked first in the State
among 38 projects submitted
for grant consideration.
According to Kathy Grims-
rud, JTPA planner, the grant
money will be used for the fun-
ding of individual financial
help to students and to cover
support group costs from July
1,1985 to June 30, 1986.
"This project not only helps
these women establish friend-
ships with others intheir,situ-
ation -- who they may have
never even met because
they're enrolled in different
programs at the school -- but it
helped us as a school identify
a population of students that
has a special need," observed
Karen Halvorson, Anoka AVTI

counselor.
"The support group here (at
Anoka AVTI) discovered baby-
sitting provisions, they dis-
covered a car pooling system
among themselves. . .just a
whole network among the stu-
dents in this situation," Hal-
vorson continued, adding, "I
think we've established an
even closer relationship with
the students."
"Sometimes students think
they can only go to their
counselors with academic pro-
blems. . .but these support
groups let them see that their
counselors are there for (per-
sonal) problems as well," said
Grimsrud.
The support groups among
the three Vo Techs had a spin-
off effect, reported Grimsrud,
noting the introduction of
similar groups at Lakewood
Community College and Inver
Hills Community College.
Karate Black 'Belt

'Twelve-year-old Jeff Garnet
of Ramsey recently recieved a
junior black belt in karate from
the Coles' School of Karate in
Elk River.
Jeff is youngest on record at
Coles to achieve black belt
level.
In order to achieve his black
belt, Jeff had to break five one-
inch boards, perform three
katas (forms) and fight two
adult black belts at the same
time - all to the satisfaction
of a panel of experts in the
field. Another requirement for
attaining the junior black belt
level is good school grades
which Jeff did accomplish.
Congratulations Jeff!
