Now 81
years young, she is the vice
president of the Andover

- ~
----

Senior Citizens Club. When
Helen Franz moved to this
community, there was only 1
mile of blacktop road. AI) other
roads were sand and deeply
rutted. When another car
would approach, the' Frantzs
would pull .their Model A off
the road so the other could
pass, then hope that they
could get back into the rut
again. Helen was a charter
member of the Andover Com-'
munity Club which was
organized in 1938 and made up
of mothers of children atten-
ding- the little Red School
House. The Club made a quilt
and sold chances for 10<1: or 3
for a quarter to raise money to
purchase a piano so that the
children could have music in
school. Through other fund
raisers and harvest dinners,
funds were also raised to add
a kitchen to the school and

'-

purchase dishes so that the
children could have hot lunch-
es. The Red School House was
eventually purchased by the
city and given t.o the Historical
Society. The School House
and original Constance
Church which Helen attended,
can be seen today at the fair
grounds. The piano that was
purchased for the school re-
mained in the city and is now
in the n~w Andover Senior
Center.
Helen now lives alone after
raising 6 boys and 1 girl but
she is far from lonely. To quote
. her, "I live by myself and love
it! I'don't have time to be lone-
some." Since 1975 she has
been caring for children and at
present gets 3 youngsters off
to 'school each day because
their parents go to work very
early. Helen cares for 8 head of
cattle but is most busy plan-

The city engineer was asked to
determine the number of inter-
sections in the City and to
make a determination of cost
of installation and mainten-
ance.
