Anoka Police Report

With' the advent of this
newsletter going into every
home in the City of Anoka, it
is our intention to make every
effort to keep each and every
citizen apprised of important
safety information. This col-
umn will consist of crime pre-
vention information, or-
dinance changes, seasonal
enforcement efforts, and
other vital information to help
keep our citizens safe and in-
formed.
HOUSE NUMBERS
.An important ordinance.
was passed recently requiring
home owners to place house
numbers on their homes by
June 1, 1985. The most impor-
tant reason for this ordinance
is to assist Fire, Ambulance,
and Police personnel in quick-
ly identifying the proper resi-
dence when responding to an
emergency call. House num-
bers must be at least 4 inches
tall and in a contrasting color
to the house. When second.s
are critical, it is imperative for
emergency response person-
nel to make quick identifica-
tion of an address. Please
help us to help you by placing
these numbers on your home.
CALL 911,
If you have an emergency
and need to call the Police,
Fire, or Ambulance, dial 911,
for emergency help.
BURGLARY PREVENTION
Make your home look and
sound occupied when you are
not at home. Install good
locks and lock them. Join
Operation Identification.
.Keep an eye. on your
neighbor's home and get
them to do the same for you.
BICYCLES _
With spring around the cor-
ner, bicyclists will soon be
out in force. The Police De-
partment' wants to remind
bicyclists. that they must obey
all the rules of the road which
pertain to automobile drivers.
In addition, bikes must be
licensed. Bike riding is also
restricted in certain areas of
Anoka such as on downtown
sidewalks and on the new
footbridge. Bikes may be
walked in these areas, how-
ever. Once again this sum-
mer, there' will be enforce- .-
ment personnel out o'n bi-
cycles. Citations will be issu-
ed which may cause violators
to be referred in for bicycle
training or fined.
GARBAGE CONTAINERS
The Police Department is
also involved through its in-
spection services in certain
health violations. We want to
make everyone aware that a
new ordinance is bei ng
drafted which requires the
removal of garbage contain-
ers from the curb after collec-
tion day. The containers must
be stored either at the rear of
the premises, in enclosed
structures on the premises, or
in the side yard set back and
screened so as to be out of
view from the street and from
adjoining property. The ordin-
ance also disallows dumping

r

---.

..

of garbage into someone
else's garbage container or
dumpster without permission.
Once again we are requesting
help from all our our residenta
in dealing with a health and
blight maintenance type of
.problem.
DOGS AND CATS
Just a reminder that dogs
must be licensed and dogs
and cats are not allowed. to
run at large. The City of Anoka
Police Department, through
. its Community Service Per-
sonnel, enforce the animal or-

dinance and maintain the city
alJimal impound site. If your
dog or cat is lost, call 421-
6632 and let us know. We can
check for the animal in the
. pound and we will also alert
the Community Service Offic-
ers to keep a look out for the
animal. .
BLIGHT ENFORCEMENT
Spring' is also the time
when enforcement is stepped
up on blight conditions in our
city. Blight factors are such
things as debris or junk which
have accumulated in a given

I
1

area or piece of property.
Community Service Officers
conduct inspections, and'
serve notices and citations
concerning blight factors.
Blight can be a threat to
public health so once .again
we ask you to help us kee-p
our citY. free from blight.
We hope this information
has been helpful to you and
we will continue to put out
public safety material in this
newsletter to better serve
you.

Your city water department
reminds you that the most
critical time for waterline
freeze-ups are between Feb.
15 and April 15. If you plan on
being gone for a weekend or
longer, please remember to
leave your cold water on while
you are gone. Simply leave
the cold water tap in your
laundry tub on to about the
size of a lead pencil and this
should prevent waterline
freeze-ups. If you do have a
freeze-up, contact the city
water department at 421-6630
for information.
