Ramsey Area Jaycees

The Ramsey Jaycees thank
the residents of Ramsey for
their participation in "Ramsey
Jaycee Fall Clean Up Day." It
was a huge success thanks to
Terry Miller, chairperson, and
Waste Management of Minne-
sota, who donated all pro-
ceeds to the Ramsey Jaycees.
As you probably know, all
citizens of Ramsey could use

the landfill all day for a
nominal fee. We had a great
response and all positive. We
are now trying, and I say try-
ing, to have a "Ramsey
Jaycee Spring Clean Up Day."
So prepare for the best. We
will keep you informed and
again thanks to Terry Miller
and Waste Management of
Minnesota.
Dinner Planned

On Saturday, February 9,
1985, the Sportsman CI ub is
sponsoring a dinner at the
Party House on Hwy. 10 to
generate scholarship funds
for needy persons.
This fund raiser is an an-
nual family event and has
been held for seven years. In
past years, this fund raiser
panded the scope of this
event to allow more persons
who desire to participate the
opportunity to do so.
. Anoka Area Chamber Newsletter

By now most businesses in
Ramsey should be receiving
the monthly newsletter, if you.
have not, call the Chamber of-
fice to get your name on the
mailing list.
The new year will start off very
busy for the Anoka Area
Chamber. January 8 will be
the normal monthly meeting,
with a representative from the
phone company discussing
the phone' situation and

hopefully providing answers
to your questions.
Additionally, Thursday, Jan-
uary 10th, from 5 to 7 p.m., we
will host a "legislative recep-
tion" with the State Senators
and Representatives. This
should be a good time to tell -
them how you feel about the
new tax proposals as they
head to S1. Paul. Then on
January 29th, we will have our
second annual Trade Fair and

business card exchange. We
would invite anyone who has
an interest in Chamber affairs
or a desire to meet other in-
teresting people to attend -
we welcome you. For more in-
formation about the Trade
Identification

Have you had a burglary or
theft lately? Many residents
of Ramsey have. Some of
these thefts could have been
prevented if some basic
precautions had been taken.
Most people don't think about
being a victim of a burglary or
theft until after it has
occured - this is natural. Why
worry about something that
might never happen. But as of
recent years, burglary and
larceny are two of the fastest
growing crimes in Minnesota.
Two major reasons for this in-
crease are the chances of

~=

a burglar getting caught are
low and the opportunity for
the execution of the crime is
high. A large percentage of
residential burglaries are
committed by juveniles with
little or no criminal back-
ground, which means there is
usually little or no evidence
left at the scene of the crime
that can be directly traced
back to the perpetrator.
There are definite steps
that an individual can take
that can drastically reduce
the chances of a burglar at-
tacking your residence; and
they do not involve spending
tons of money to accomplish.
Now, I know what you're think-
ing. If a burglar really wants to
get in, he will. This is only par-
tially true. If a burglar has to
spend several minutes trying
to gain entry into a house, his
chances of getting caught
rise proportionately. The
more road blocks placed in
the path of the burglar, the
better the chance of someone
seeing him. He may resort to
entering the residence by
making more noise, another
element precious to burglars.
The intent of the burglar is to
get in, get the goods, and get
out in the quickest and
quietest way possible. Now
some people might make the
statement, "Why should I
bother; I have insurance; if
anything is taken or damaged,
I'll get it back." Sometimes
yes, sometimes no. You may

have insurance that covers
your property for depreciating
value rather than replacement
value. If you do have replace-
ment value, then all you have
to worry about is someone in-
truding into your house,
usually by busting down the
front door, ransacking it,
. stealing precious keepsake
items. damaging property,
loss of irreplaceable items,
arguing with an insurance in-
vestigator, talking to police,
attempting to put your house
back into order again, and
possibly suffering increased
insurance rates. Don't kid
yours.elf into thinking that this
can't happen to you - it can
and the truth is that it will pro-
bably happen to you sooner or
later.
One of the ways you can
discourage burglars is by join-
ing Operation Identification.
This is a process whereby the
homeowner can mark their
property with a special instru-
. ment with a special computer
number. If their property is
stolen it can be traced back to
them, even if the property is
taken out of state. A burglary
was reported by a Ramsey
resident and several elec-
tronic items were taken. The
homeowner did not copy the
serial numbers of the items,
nor did he mark the items in
any way. Had similar property
been recovered, we could not
return the items to the victim
because there was no way to

identify the items as his.
There are several thousand
VCR's, cameras, TV's, etc.,
made by manufacturers each
year and the only way that we
can make positive identifica-
tion is by a serial or special
identification number. Opera-
tion Identification is FREE.
Ramsey's Police Department
will loan you the tools, papers
and stickers to assist you in
the identification process. We
also explain the program to
you in detail. Along with
Operation Identification, we
provide you with a burglary
packet which contains pam-
phlets on locks, alarms, how
to protect yourself when out
alone, and other pertinent in-
formation. You can stop by Ci-
ty Hall, Monday through Fri-
day, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to get
these materials. Call ahead to
let us know and we'll have the
materials ready for you when
you arrive (427-1410)
Another way to reduce the
threat of burglary is to set up,
or attend, one of our burglary
seminars. These seminars are
free and very informal. It also
gives you a chance to ask one
of our officers questions in
regards to any pOlice matter.
These seminars help elim-
inate problems which occur
between the police and the
public due to poor com-
munication. A seminar will be
held in February at Ramsey
Elementary School. Contact
