Page 8 - Ramsey Resident, September 1984

iliIl~::;,;'- ....a......-

- ~.

::;:..::~.

Get to know your septic tank

Yes. aettinq to know your
septic tank does sound just
a little bit ridiculous.
However, if you treat your
septic system right, it pro-
bably won't fail you. Those of
you who have experienced
problems with your systems
know just how annoying they
can be.
Some of the things you can
do to keep your system work-
ing are as follows:

1 I

1) A "starter" is not needed
for bacterial action to begin.
2) Additives should not be us-
ed. Some additives cause the
accumulated sludge to in-
crease in volume and be
flushed out into the drain-
field, plugging soil pores.
Other additives, particularly
degreasers, may be car-
cinogens (cancer causing) or
suspected carcinogens and
will flow directly into the
ground water.
3) Discharge all sewage
wastes from the home into
the septic tank. Don't run
Ia:undry wastes directly into
the drainfield.
4)' Normal amounts of
detergents, bleaches,
drain cleaners, toilet bowl
deoderizers and. other
household chemicals can be
used and won't harm the
bacterial action in the septic
tank.

,...--.,

5) Don't deposit coffee
grounds, cooking fats, wet-
strength towels, disposable
diapers, facial tissues,
cigarette butts and similar
nondecomposable materials
into the septic tank. Avoid
dumping grease down the
drain. It can build up in the
tank and plug the inlet. Keep
a separate container for
waste grease and throw it out
with the trash.
6) Use'.a good quality white
toilet tissue that breaks up
easily when wet. .
7) Remove the sludge and
scum by pumping (every 1 to 3
years for 1000 gallon tank ser~
ving a 3 bedroom home hav-
ing four occupants). .
8) If you must use a garbage
disposal, you may. need to
. remove the septic tank solids
every year or more otten.
Ground garbage will frequent-
ly find its way out of the sep-
tic tank and clog the soil treat-
ment system. It is better to
compost, incinerate or throw
out garbage with the trash.
9) Be conservative with your
use of water. Each gallon of
water used must be treated
and disposed. Repair all
leaky fixtures and reduce the
amount of water used in laun-
dry, bathing' and toilet
flushing.

10) Wash only full loads in the
was!1er and spread the
washing out during the week
to avoid overloading the
sewage system in a single
.day.
11) Each bath or shower uses
30 gallons of water.' FilliOg
the tub not quite so full and
not turning the shower on all
the way could save 5 to 10
gallons with each bathing. .
12) Routinely checking the
toi let float valve to be sure
that it isn't sticking and the
water isn't running con-
tinuously. Be sure the toilet
is not flushing unnecessarily.
Don't use the toilet to dispose
of house cleaning water or
cigarette butts. Have the last
person to wash. up in the
morning and evening flush
the toilet after everyone else
has used it. This could save
20 to 30 gallons a day for a
family of four.
13) Water softeners will not
harm the septic tank action.
However, the additional water
will need to be treated and
disposed of by the soil treat-
ment system. If the softener
wastewater overloads the
soil treatment system, the
wastewater can be discharg-
ed to the ground surface
since it contains no
pathogens.

. q ou Aile ?lot Alone

--.- -
- - .' ~. -.
- .-. -- .
==-"'-=--=-=~"'-'=:.~--:--=-::::-::=:~~;.~~::._, ___-'.~---=-;_:...:- _=..;.C.~: -::-.'":". -. _.-:
~~~ _.~~~-~~~~~.~::~~~~~=~~~_~.~._. ---~~~~::-~i~- ~_:~n.~;
.-.----
Right of ways
Again this winter, as in
most, we will experience the
problem of our snow plows
running into things in the
Right-of-Way that don't
belong there. These consist
of fences, railroad ties, rocks
and numerous other items
many of you place on your pro-
perty that really belongs to
the public as a part of the
street. For those of you who
don't know, the public Right-
of-Way does not s'top at the
edge of the roadway but is, in
most instances, 33 ft. from
the center of the street. What
this then means is that the
first twenty (20) feet or so
from the edge of the road
does not in fact belong to the
home owner even if it is yours
to maintain. Further, the
placement of any obstruc-
tions in this area,whether it be
fences or whatever, is not only
in violation of City policy but
could subject you as a home
owner to a personal liability.
In view of all this we would
ask that you refrain from plac-
ing obstructions in the Right
of Way and further ask that
those of YOLJ that have items
.in the Right of Way make it a
fall project to have them
removed.
Everyone involved in admitting a relative to a nursing home
shares a common concern: "Did I make the right decision?"
RECOGNIZING YOUR FEELINGS
You're not alone with your feelings -of guilt, inadequacy,
denial. anxiety and frustration. But these feelings, one or
more of them, can be emotionally crippling. They can prevent
you from living your own life and'from helping your loved
ones when they need you most. The important thing is to
recognize your feelings and learn to cope with them. Re-
member, you are not alone. Park River Estates shares in your
concerns.
WORKING TO MEET YOUR NEEDS
At Park River Estates, our Family Council has developed~
support group for you and your family. It provides you with
an opportunity to discuss your feelings with others who have
and are experiencing what you're going through.
Park River residents have developed their own council. Thev
work together in committees addressing their very speci~l
concerns. Their direction helps you and the Park River
Estates staff meet their physical. emotional. spiritual and
social needs. Our goal is to help you and your loved one share
in a full and happy life.
Entering a nursing home is difficult for most people.
