The purpose of
these changes is to improve the awareness of the STOP conditions on Alpine Drive at these two
county trunk highway intersections and increase safety. The primary changes associated with
this new traffic control plan for these two intersections includes the following
(a) Placing a double set of STOP signs on the City street approaches; with a standard 36 inch
sign on the left side and an oversized 48 inch sign on the right; and including Cross
Traffic Does Not Stop tags beneath the STOP signs.
(b) Installing a double set of symbol style STOP AHEAD signs on both side of the City
street approaches. In the case of eastbound Alpine Boulevard approaching Ramsey
Boulevard this will be a replacement of a word style STOP AHEAD sign. These STOP
AHEAD signs will be placed at the approach distances recommended in the Uniform
Manual on Traffic Control Devices in Minnesota.

Public Works Director Olson indicated the changes described in (a) above have been made by
the County Highway Department. The changes recommended in portion (b) above are the
responsibility of the City. Mr. Olson advised it was the recommendation of the Public Works
Committee that the City install the recommended signage changes at the intersections of Alpine
Boulevard and CSAH 83 and Alpine Boulevard and CSAH 56 at an estimated cost of$1,200.

Mayor Gamec inquired about the comment that the County was in favor of this change in the
traffic signs.

City Council / November 28, 2006
