MIDDLE SCHOOL
MILESTONES

'The Sandburg Science Fair was held on St.
Patrick's Day in the school cafeteria. Almost
sixty 5th and 6th grade students participated
in this annual event. The students displayed
projects on which they had worked for about
six weeks. In the afternoon the students and
projects were judged by a team of well quali-
fied volunt~er judges. The judges included a
few parents and many college and high school
science students. The six people with the
higest scores were: Dan Maurer (6th), Jennifer
Gruber (5th), Alan Howe (5th), Jon Jensen(5th),
Beth Isenhart (5th), and Jeff Sieber (5th).
These six students then participated in the
District #11 Science Fair on April 9, at
Northdale Junior High.
The sixth grade orchestra students from
Sandburg participated in the Elementary Orche-
stra Festival held on Thursday, March 24, at
Anoka Senior High. Students came from each of
the District #11 elementary schools to rehearse
for two hours on Thursday morning. They then
performed a concert for parents and friends
that evening. There were about 200 partici-
pating orchestra students in this exciting
musical event. Students from Sandburg were:
Brett Belschner, Raphael Karlsen, Duane Koechler,
Lori McLaien, Kelly Schreiber, Ykun Ung,
Christine Glidden, and Larry Powers. The par-
ents and students were'treated to a brief per-
formance of the "Pops Strings" group from
Anoka Senior High. Mrs. Bonnie Melting dir-
ected that group of very talented high school
string students. Elementary school teachers
conducting the festival were: Bonnie Melting,
On Tuesday, April 12, the 7th grade choir
under the direction of Mrs. LeCuyer gave a
concert for the students in the afternoon and
one for the parents in the evening. The con-
cert was enti tied "A Day in 7th Grade at
Sandburg Middle School". The program followed
a typical 7th grade student's daily schedule
at Sandburg with selections related to each
school subj ect.
Many special events are just around the cor-
ner. There will be band and orchestra con-
certs later in April. On May 13, the third
annual Sandburg Talent Show will be held.
Students have already been auditioning for the
show. Following the selection of the parti-
cipants, there are four weeks of hard practice
for them as they smooth out the rough edges
in their act. There will also be a few faculty
surprise acts in the show.
CAMP COURAGE '83

During the week of March 13-18, the 7th grade
students of Sarrdburg Middle School got a chance
to go on an environmental camping trip to Camp
Courage. This was a part of their Environmental
Education unit in science.
This camping trip has been a tradition at
Sandburg for the past six years. It gives
students an opportunity to experience life in
the great outdoors with their teachers and
fellow students.
In order to make this trip possible every-
one had to sell candles to raise money, and
in addition pay fifteen dollars.
Half of the 7th grad left for the first
three days, and the second half left for the
next three days. During the three days at
Camp the students had to attend different
activity classes, such as: forestry, cross
country skiing, and a miniature field trip to
Pioneer Village, which is a re-creation of
life in Minnesota's past history. They were
served three meals a day, and had two re-
creational periods in which they could swim,
The reasons why the seventh grade teachers
give up their time and fiamilies for therr days
to take us on this trip is because they feel
it is important for us to learn and see things
we normally wouldn't get to do. We had to
learn how to get along in a different en vir-
you know and some that you never would've
