Tips And Warnings On Energy Conservation

With the current c,ost of energy constantly increasing, people
are resorting to a number of various means of reducing heating
costs.
The most popular seems to be the wood heater or fireplace.
The wood heater, although very effective can also be very
hazardous if improperly vented. A well constructed cast iron
heater canproduoe in excess of 100,000 B.T.U. per hour but
along with this are flue temperatures that can exceed 1000
degrees. Therefore, any solid fuel heater requires a Class A flue.
The minimum clearance to combustibles for a Class A flue is
two inches.
Common venting of solid fuel heaters and any gas appliances is
not permitted. The much lower flue temperature of gas,
"approximately 400 degrees +", would back draft when the solid
fuel heater was in operation. This can result in the forming of
carbon monoxide poisoning.
The fireplace, another source of auxiliary heating, is also
becoming quite popular. Properly constructed, it can be of real
value. Improper construction can, however, result in more heat

loss than heat gain. This results from excessive venting which
pulls the warmed air out of the house and out the flue.
Both the solid fuel heater and the fireplace consume large
amounts of oxygen. The construction of new homes today, with
vapor barriers and overall tight construction, does not allow for
any large amounts of air infiltration. Therefore, combustion air'
should be provided for any solid fuel heating apparatus.
The other energy saver, although not as popular, is the influe
heat saver that reclaims some of the heat normally lost through
the flue. These should not be used on any flue, venting gas
equipment because of the already low flue temperature: They can
be used on flues venting oil or solid fuel. However, caution should
be used as lowered flue temperatures can restrict proper venting.
Needless to say, this short report on the use of auxiliary
heating will not answer all the questions you may have nor do we
profess to have all the answers. However, when and if you do
have any questions in regards to building or any other items
related to building, please do not hesitate to call. If we can't
answer your questions we'll either refer you to someone who can
or research the information and call you back.

FAMILY SWIM NITES
to Highlid1t Winter Program
The community pools at Fred Moore Junior High and Jackson
Junior High will be open for exel usive use by Ramsey area
families during the Winter's Community School Program.
