AAAACHO!
This sound is something that we expect to hear in
the fall and winter months in association with colds or flu.
But this sound and the automatic "Bless you! " is being heard
more and more often in the summer because of a rise in the
number of people suffering from allergies. It is estimated
that about 50 million Americans suffer from allergic reactions
to all sorts of irritants.
Any one who has ever suffered from the itchy,
watery eyes or a stuffy or runny nose, knows they are
experiencing symptoms of an allergy. Clinically defined, an
allergy is an overreaction by the body's immune system to
an otherwise harmless substance, such as pollen or pet
dander. Contact with an allergy- causing irritant triggers the
production of antibodies that cause the immune cells in the
mucous linings ofyour eyes, nose and sometimes, the lungs,
to release chemical responses -- histamine —to the irritants.
When histamine is released by the membranes in your nose,
it produces the familiar symptoms of an allergy– itchy, red
and swollen eyes, a stuffy or runny nose and frequent
sneezing or coughing.
While there are several substances that are found
outdoors, indoors and in foods we eat that can cause an
allergic reaction, the most common allergens are inhaled:
Pollen – Spring, summer and autumn, pollen is
produced by trees, grasses, weeds and flowers in
most climates.
Dust mites – While house dust harbors all kinds of
potential allergens, including pollen and mold, the main
indoor allergy trigger is the dust mite. Thousands of
these microscopic insects are contained in a pinch of
house dust. House dust is the major cause of year -
round allergy symptoms.
Often, while you cannot reasonably completely rid
your home of dust mites, there are things that you
can do that can help mitigate the allergens cause by
them. Medical specialists suggest, especially for
bedrooms, to remove carpeting and upholstered
furniture (ifpossible), wash bedding often and use
allergy- preventing coverings for mattresses and
pillows. Also keeping the humidity low –to 40 % --
helps the situation as well. Dust mites like warm,
MCGRUFF'S PUBLIC SAFETY CORNER
The City of Ramsey Police Department is asking
for anyone interested in being a Siren Observer. They are
looking for volunteers who have the time to check on the
City sirens so that when the sirens are needed, they will be
functioning. These sirens are used in the event of an
emergency, i.e. threatening weather.
Siren Observers are needed the first Wednesday
of each month at 1:00 p.m. at the following locations:
• Siren #6 – 170t'' Lane NW (County Road 27) and
Barium Street NW
• Siren #9 –16500 Block of Nowthen Boulevard NW
(County Road 5)
• Siren #15 – Field North of 7800 Block of Highway
#10 by the Railroad tracks (1/4 mile East of Armstrong
Boulevard NW on Highway #10)
Anyone who is interested in helping out our
community in this way, please contact the Ramsey Police
Department at 763- 427 -6812.
A reminder to protect your valuables: The Police
Department has recently experienced an increasing amount
of calls from residents reporting missing items from their
vehicles. It is recommended that you leave valuables at
home but if you need to bring them, i.e. a purse or wallet,
please take it with you when you leave your vehicle. Often
just locking them in the vehicle is not enough security; if
someone wants the item, it is easy enough to break a window
and grab the item. Now the vehicle owner is out his wallet
and a vehicle window.
If you see something or someone that looks
suspicious, please don't hesitate to call 9 -1 -1. This will get
a quicker response and may prevent a theft.
