CONSIDER RATIFICATION FOR REPAIR OF
FIRE TANKER PUMP
By: Dean Kapler, Fire Chief

Background:

During a routine fire drill held on September 9, 1998, it was discovered that the pump on
Tanker Truck No. 1 did not produce enough pressure. After a review was performed by
Emergency Apparatus of New Brighton, it was determined that the pump body flap valve
slots were no longer in working condition. Emergency Apparatus made
recommendations for the three following options:

1) Replace the pump body for an estimated cost of $12,000.

2) Repair existing body flap valve slots and test for an approximate cost of $7,500.

3) Replace pump. The current pump's manufacturer is no longer in business. The
proposed new pump would cost approximately $9,500 and installation is difficult to
estimate. It is anticipated that the total cost for the replacement would certainly be more
than $12,000.

Recommendation:

Staff would recommend option #2 which would mean repairing the existing body flap
valve slots for an estimated cost of $7,500. The repair would be financed through
adjustments in the Fire Department budget. If the Fire Department is unable to find an
adequate amount of adjustments, then the Fire Department will request a transfer from the
Council Contingency Fund.

Council Action:

Motion to recommend authorization of the repair of the body flap valve slots for fire
tanker pump from Fire Tanker No. 1.

Reviewed by:

Fire Chief
Finance Officer
City Administrator

FC: 09/22/98

jo/FirePuntp, doc
