Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood stated this was looked at previously at the January and February 2007 meetings. The Commission reviewed the various choices for an interim location for the skate park; and determined that this examination should generally focus on Alpine Park at this time. Chairperson Johns thought from the beginning that once the skate park was placed, they would have a hard time moving it so she thought a second skate park would be needed. She would like to see them build this with more permanency. Commissioner Olds thought based on the discussion from the previous meeting that making it permanent would seem appropriate, that way they did not need to look at the expense of moving it elsewhere and if there is not a need for a second skate park, they would not need to move it and if a second one is needed, they would then look at additional equipment. Chairperson Johns stated with the number of kids in the area, the skate park would likely be a success. Commissioner Olds thought this park would be easier to get to also. Parks Riverblood explained to the Commission that they may be able to install a rink at the park and allow them to use the rink all year round and they would not need to use the parking area as an interim skate park. They could also put up a warming house for the skaters and sliders. Chairperson Johns wondered when the rinks at the school will be removed. Parks Riverblood was not sure, but he indicated the School District wants to remove them to put in more parking for their events. He noted the warming house and rink are not in the greatest shape. The sooner they plan on replacing the rinks the better, as it helps guide maintenance decisions. Commissioner Shryock clarified that when they discussed Alpine Park, they liked the idea that this park was very visible unlike some of the other parks. This would be easier to monitor. She thought all around this would be a very good fit for them. Consensus of the Commission was to make the skate park at Alpine Park more permanent and to incorporate the skating rinks as part of this. Case #3: Concept Planning for Municipal Property West of Sunfish Lake The purpose of this case is to initiate concept planning for the City owned land west of Sunfish Lake. The Park and Recreation Commission recomended $30,000 within the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) to provide for planning expenses relating to this significant site. The funding source would be the Park Trust Fund. Chairperson Johns did not think the proposal changed very much from the one they did several years ago. She stated this is a project she has wanted for many years and she was in favor of getting the concept plan going. Park and Recreation Commission/March 8, 2007 Page 3 of 5
