City of Ramsey
Active Community Planning Proposal
Deadline: June 1, 2007

Section IV: Long-Term Commitment to Active Living

Anticipated impact oftlte planning process on Ramsey

Ramsey has set out to accomplish what very few surburban/exurban areas even consider: to create an

environment that accommodates, encourages, and achieves a mix of urban, rural, and suburban residential

development, mixed use areas, and a transit-oriented downtown. The vision of Ramsey Town Center stems from

the idea thatthe suburban reality does not have to be limited to auto-dependent sprawl that discourages active

living in everyday life. The dedication the City has shown to the principles that Ramsey Town Center embodies is

long-lasting and pervasive throughout the entire community. Additionally, the Ramsey 3 process is a grassroots

effort to explore alternate ways of developing other areas of the City that respect the environment, encourage

walkability, and foster the sense of place that most suburbs lack. City Staff, City Council, and the residents have

proven their dedication to the principles of active living.

With the assistance ofBCBS, the City anticipates that the following results will be produced:

. An overall and consistent dedication to promoting physical activity within the Comprehensive Plan.

. Integrating public health with urban planning.

. A set of urban design tools to utilize in development review and short and long-term infrastructure

planning.

. Best practices for promoting and increasing the amount of walking and biking in Ramsey.

. Detailed description of how to provide essential connections within multiple modes of the transportation

system.

. A transit section that integrates active living principles and multi-modal transportation.

. Best practices for designing and implementing an effective and well-used regional trail corridor with

river, rail, and highway crossings.

. A plan and cost estimate for the connection of RTC and the transit station to the proposed regional trail,

the Mississippi River, and Hennepin County.

-216-
