Case #2 Update on Dirt Driveway Paving
Background:
As directed from the May 8, 2007 City Council meeting staff has prepared information relative
to the goal of eliminating unpaved driveways within the City. Staff obtained a cost estimate in
the range of $2.50 per square foot. Most of the driveways are between 60 and 100 feet long.
Assuming a minimum width of about 12 feet, the cost per driveway would likely be in the range
of $1,800 to $3,000. If the City were to consider picking up the portion of 12 foot drive that
exists in the City right -of -way, that is from 21 to 15 feet long depending on whether it is a 24
foot wide road in a 66 foot right -of -way or a 33 foot wide road in a 60 foot right -of -way. The
City cost would be in the range of $450 to $630 to pave from the edge of the bituminous road up
to the right -of -way line.
The Committee and staff discussed the following in relation to eliminating gravel driveways:
• Receiving bids from contractors that would be available for residents to contract with for
paving their driveway. Options would include paving to, the point the City determines as
mandatory or the length desired by the property owner.
• The likelihood of difficulty for contractors to formulate a bid price without knowing the
number of driveways that would participate or the ability to get equipment in and out.
• A policy that would require the right -of -way to be paved.
• The City to complete an inventory to determine the number of potential driveways,
receiving contractor bids, and making arrangements with the contractor to work out
arrangements with the individual homeowners.
Action:
Motion to direct staff to continue working on a survey of dirt driveways and draft policies
regarding driveway paving for further consideration by the Committee and Council
Case #3 Update on Storm Water Improvements in Fog Ridge Estates
Background:
Project 07 -03 of the 2007 Street Maintenance Program includes the sealcoating and cracksealing
of Fox Ridge Estates. In investigating drainage issues at the intersections of Potassium Street
with Potassium Court and 172 Lane it has become apparent that storm sewer would be the best
solution to resolving the drainage problems that exist along a 1,200 foot segment of roadway.
The storm sewer installation will affect half of the 30 foot wide roadway and will not be able to
be scheduled until mid to late August. It would therefore not be advisable to sealcoat this
segment of street in July with the remainder of this subdivision.
As a result of this elimination four properties proposed for the $252 sealcoat assessment will not
receive sealcoating of any of their frontage in 2007 and another 5 properties will receive a partial
_11g_
