Case #16: Report from Personnel Committee

1) Receive Recommendation to Approve Appointments to Police Sergeant Positions

Administrative Services Manager Waite Smith reported that the two people who applied for the
Sergeant positions, James Way and Robert Kuhn, have successfully completed their written
exams and oral interviews. The Planning Commission is recommending they be appointed to the
positions, effective on July 1, 1997, at an annual salary of $51,000 and a six-month probationary
period. Also recommended is that James Way would be designated Acting Police Chief in the
ChieFs absence.

Motion by Councilmember Beyer and seconded by Councilmember Beahen to adopt Resolution
#97-06-153 appointing James Way as a Sergeant in the Police Department and Acting Police
Chief in the absence of the Chief, and to appoint Robert Kuhn as a Sergeant in the Police
Department, both appointments to take effect July 1, 1997, at an annual salary of $51,000, and a
six-month probationary period.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gamec, Councilmembers Beyer, Beahen and Zimmerman.
Voting No: Councilmember Haas Steffen - because she did not know where this placed them on
the pay scale and she does not like the City's policy of no pay increase after six months.

2) Receive Recommendation to Authorize Hiring of Public Works Maintenance
Worker

Ms. Waite Smith stated that the Personnel Committee is recommending authorizing staff to hire a
Public Works Maintenance Worker.
